Biography
Over 1.4 million records stand to the credit of Mama's Jasje, the Flemish pop/rock ensemble that shifts personnel often and originates with Peter Vanlaet, placing the group among Belgium's highest-selling acts ever. Vanlaet launched the band in 1990, after which a platinum-certified single titled "Zo Ver Weg" arrived quickly. Their first album, Paradijs op Aarde from 1991, enjoyed comparable success, matched by that year's "Doe het Licht Maar Uit," which logged eight weeks on Belgium's Ultratop 50 Flemish chart. Letters en Lawaai, the second album, surfaced in 1992, earned gold status, and yielded the hits "Zonder Verhaal" plus "Teken van Leven." Following the third release, Testament van een Jaarget in 1993, personnel adjustments occurred. Vanlaet kept the project alive as a duo, which delivered the 1995 successes "Wunderbar" and "Madeleine."
The Hommages series of albums began in 1997; its opening volume ascended to number one and occupied the Ultratop 200 Flemish Albums chart for 44 weeks, while "Als de Dag Van Toen" and "Laat Me Alleen" both reached the Top Five. Hommages II followed in 1998 and attained the number-two slot on the same Flemish albums ranking. Pop Model appeared two years afterward, succeeded in 2002 by the greatest-hits set Als de Dag Van Toen: Het Beste Van. Zwart op Wit, containing fresh material, arrived the next year and featured the Top Ten single "Het Is Over." After the 2005 track "Beestjes," Hommages III emerged, peaking at number 12 and spotlighting "Laat Je Hart Slaan." Extensive touring filled most of 2008, after which Morgen Zal Het Anders Zijn surfaced in 2009 and included the Top 40 single "Rainbow."
Activity remained limited through much of the 2010s. Vanlaet assembled Peter Vanlaet en de Wolven in 2016, issuing two singles with that outfit. Mama's Jasje nevertheless resurfaced in 2018 via Nieuwe Jas, which climbed to position 53 on the Ultratop 200 Flemish Albums chart. Special live shows and the television program Liefde voor Muziek marked the project's 30th anniversary in 2020. That May brought 30 Jaar Mama's Jasje... de Jaren Verstand, blending archival and recent tracks with segments from Liefde voor Muziek.
