Italian rock band Modà originated after singer Francesco "Kekko" Silvestre crossed paths with guitarist Matteo "Tino" Alberti and Enrico Palmosi, who would later handle arrangements. Keyboardist Paolo Bovi, a longtime acquaintance of Silvestre, soon completed the early lineup, and the musicians began performing throughout Milan, their shared hometown. Lead guitarist Diego Arrigoni, bassist Stefano Forcella, and drummer Manuel Signoretto eventually rounded out the group, and relentless gigging quickly built a devoted local audience. A pivotal opportunity arrived in 2003 when an artistic director from the major Italian broadcaster RaiUno attended one of their concerts and extended an invitation to appear on television. The exposure led directly to the release of their debut single, "Ti Amo Veramente," and the self-titled full-length album that followed.

In 2005 the band secured a deal with Around the Music Records, after which Bovi departed. The remaining five members pressed forward, issuing their second album, Quello Che Non Ti Ho Detto, in 2006, with Palmosi assuming keyboard duties on record. Two years later Modà returned with Sala D'Attesa, which introduced drummer Claudio Dirani and guitarist Enrico Zapparoli in place of founding members Signoretto and Alberti. The 2009 compilation Le Origini collected earlier material.

Signing with the Ultrasuoni label in 2010, the group began collaborating with producer Brando. Breakout momentum arrived the next year through three Top Five singles: "Sono Già Solo," "La Notte," and "Arriverà," the last featuring Emma. Released in early 2011, the album Viva i Romantici topped the Italian chart for five weeks and approached half a million copies sold. Gioia, issued two years later, also reached number one, propelled by the singles "Se Si Potesse Non Morire" and "Dove è Sempre Sole," the latter a collaboration with Pau Donés of Jarabe de Palo.
