Biography
Chicago MC Montana of 300 rose from anonymity to collaborating with Yeezy within a remarkably short span, spending 2015 layering his voice onto unofficial remixes before closing out the year alongside Kanye West. He launched his recording path in 2008 as part of the collective 300, a name drawn from the movie centered on gladiators, and the outfit drew from the drill sound native to South Chicago while contributing to a remix of Chief Keef’s “Don’t Like.” The group had dissolved by 2014, prompting its members to pursue individual paths. Montana accelerated his momentum that following year via the single “Air Jordan” plus unofficial reworkings of “White Iverson,” “Chiraq,” and “Trap Queen.” Kanye West summoned the rapper to his residence for studio sessions, an association that drew attention once Montana shared images of himself alongside Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin at Yeezy’s house. Amid mounting interest from major labels, he issued the street album Gunz n Roses late in 2015. His first proper full-length, Fire in the Church, arrived in 2016 and included a guest spot from Kevin Gates. Twelve months afterward he released the follow-up Don’t Doubt the God, then the Black Sunday EP a few months later. With the arrival of his third set, Pray for the Devil, in 2018, Montana reinforced the annual-release pattern he had established beginning with Fire in the Church, consistently dropping projects on May 20th, a date he linked superstitiously to his achievements.
