The Christian rock group Revive first took shape in Sydney, Australia, through the efforts of vocalist Dave Hanbury and guitarist Tyler Hall. During 2004, after the pair had spent time writing and delivering songs to youth groups and school ministries, they enlarged the lineup by recruiting bassist Rich Thompson and drummer Mike Tenkate. Later that year the expanded quartet issued its debut album, Where I Belong. Steady growth in listeners encouraged the members in 2006 to quit their regular jobs and devote themselves to Revive on a full-time basis. That commitment produced results when their second album, Trafalgar Street, appeared the same year. The record drew notice from the American CCM band Third Day, which then asked Revive to open several dates on the Australian leg of its tour. Third Day singer Mac Powell was sufficiently impressed to urge the band to travel to the United States for its next recording project. In 2007 the musicians left Australia for Atlanta, GA, and began working with Powell. The collaboration yielded Chorus of the Saints, released on Essential in 2008. The first personnel shift occurred in 2009 when Hall, who had never fully adjusted to life in America, returned to Australia with his wife and left the group without a guitarist while work on a fourth album was underway. Nevertheless guitarist A.J. Cheek joined shortly afterward and quickly aligned with the remaining members on creative matters. In 2010 Revive issued its fourth full-length album, Blink.
