Sammy Arriaga represents a rare outlier in country music, emerging from a city and cultural background seldom linked to the genre. The Miami native launched his path by traveling to Nashville in 2011 for an audition on the tenth season of American Idol, where he advanced all the way to Hollywood. Country had not ranked among his strongest preferences at the time, yet his father urged a focus on the style for the competition because of its consistent results, a detail Arriaga later shared with the Miami New Times in 2015. Although he fell short of the final 24 on the program, he pressed forward with country pursuits that included steady touring and the release of his debut single “Lighter Up” in 2014. The ballad “Cold in Miami” arrived the following year, but momentum built in earnest during 2016 with the acoustic mixtape Banjos N Bongos. That project marked his first integration of Latin rhythms into mainstream country, an approach he developed further on the 2017 EP Meet in the Middle.
