Biography
Born on April 1, 1986, Sergio Rivero captured the fourth-season title on the Spanish reality series Operación Triunfo. Before stepping onto that Idol-style stage, the future singer had worked as a supermarket clerk and developed an early passion for American soul and R&B. Lacking any previous stage background, he entered the competition as an unlikely prospect. Rivero’s schooling at English-speaking institutions nevertheless set him apart, giving him a clear edge in both pronunciation and emotional delivery whenever English-language songs appeared. His unexpected triumph led to the November 2005 release of the debut album Quiero on RLM, which earned platinum certification within five days by moving more than 150,000 copies. Twelve months afterward Sony BMG issued the follow-up Contigo, which reached AFYVE’s Top 20 yet sold only 35,000 units during its opening weeks and fell well short of the first album’s commercial impact.
