Building contractors Aaron Gray and Josh Arnett, lifelong friends from the Midwest, first captured national attention in 2015 after posting a Facebook video of themselves performing a gospel hymn at an Indiana construction site. While continuing their regular work as craftsmen, the pair steadily expanded their parallel music career under the name the Singing Contractors, issuing two independent country-gospel albums before joining the Gaither Music Group for their major-label debut, the 2019 release Working on a Building.

Gray and Arnett had grown up harmonizing gospel songs within their families and later found themselves on overlapping job sites around Indianapolis, where they would often sing traditional hymns together during the workday. That casual habit led to an impromptu three-part recording with local pastor Paul Bigger of the hymn “How Great Thou Art,” which quickly amassed millions of streams after they shared the clip online. An appearance on Fox & Friends soon followed, heightening their visibility as the Singing Contractors, and by the end of 2015 they had issued their first independent album, also titled How Great Thou Art. They maintained their contracting schedules while releasing a second independent project, Simply Put, in 2017. Their profile rose further in 2019 when they signed with Gaither Music Group and delivered the live national album Working on a Building: Hymns and Gospel Classics, closing out the year with the holiday collection Building a Christmas to Remember.
