Biography
An Pierlé cultivated a theatrical, operatic strain of piano-centered art-pop that drew frequent parallels to a Belgian counterpart of Tori Amos. She entered the world in 1974 and, from toddlerhood onward, immersed herself in music, acting, and dance while pursuing a short course of classical piano instruction. At seventeen she gained admission to Antwerp’s Studio Herman Teirlinck Art School; during her third year there she presented her first solo program devoted entirely to original songs, performing atop a transparent ergonomic ball that replaced the conventional piano bench and remained a signature of her stage setup thereafter. In 1996 she submitted a demo to the annual Humo’s Rock Rally contest and advanced to the finals, propelled by a jury-acclaimed interpretation of Gary Numan and Tubeway Army’s synth-pop staple “Are Friends Electric?” The track also registered as a Belgian radio success, yet Pierlé declined the surrounding attention and instead devoted nearly two years to the touring ensemble of the theatrical production Bernadetje. Occasional solo appearances nonetheless sustained industry and audience interest, leading Warner Music Benelux to sign her in early 1998; the resulting debut album, Mud Stories, appeared the following year. Composer and arranger Koen Gisen joined her for the follow-up, the Brian Eno-influenced Helium Sunset, released in 2002. That record’s subsequent tour incorporated a full band and orchestra, resources that likewise informed the 2006 release White Velvet.
