Modern country performer David Fanning absorbed the intricacies of crafting chart-topping records through direct immersion, having first built a track record as a producer, songwriter, and touring musician alongside established Nashville artists prior to launching his solo career. Born in 1987 in Ardmore, Alabama, close to the state line with Tennessee, he absorbed country radio from an early age and developed a particular affinity for the decade's leading Nashville figures, among them Kenny Chesney, David Lee Murphy, and Neal McCoy. His fascination with studio work led him, at age fourteen, to begin teaching himself the functions of Pro Tools software. At twenty, Fanning abandoned passive aspirations and relocated to Nashville, where he quickly connected with Rich Redmond, Kurt Allison, and Tully Kennedy—the trio behind New Voice Entertainment, then collaborating with Jason Aldean and his ensemble. He received an invitation to become part of New Voice and, over the ensuing years, produced three number one country singles: Thompson Square's "Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not" and "If I Didn't Have You," along with Parmalee's "Carolina."

Fanning's initial break as a recording artist arrived unexpectedly when Storme Warren, a SiriusXM country host, sought a twang-infused rendition of a Justin Timberlake song for an upcoming interview segment. Warren commissioned Fanning to create the track, and within thirty-six hours he supplied a gritty, country-flavored take on "Drink You Away." Timberlake publicly endorsed the version via Twitter, prompting Red Bow Records, an imprint of Broken Bow Records, to issue it commercially. The single gained traction at country radio, securing Fanning a recording contract; in 2015 he issued his follow-up single, "Doin' Country Right," with plans for a full album before year's end.
