Biography
Enigma Norteño, a regional Mexican ensemble originating from Culiacán, Sinaloa, attained their United States breakthrough in 2010 through the hit singles “El Ondeado (M1)” and “Aunque Sea en Silencio (Cuatro Paredes),” thereafter establishing themselves as an international force. Every release that followed—whether single or album—through De Aqui Soy in 2017 registered on the charts, while the accompanying videos accumulated hundreds of millions of views.
Famed for their Sinaloense approach and especially their narcocorridos, the quartet consists of Ernesto Barajas on bass and vocals, Humberto Pérez on guitar and vocals, Freddy Hernández on accordion, and José Baldenegro on drums. Their first full-length arrived with El Jardinero in 2004, succeeded by Infiel in 2007 and La Invitación in 2008. American traction developed via the fourth album, Corridos de Altura (2009), which yielded the singles “El Ondeado (M1)” and “El Sr. Mayo Zambada”; the former gained particular traction by entering the Top 40 of the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. Their fifth album, Juego Prohibido (2010), achieved still greater impact with the Top 20 single “Aunque Sea en Silencio (Cuatro Paredes)” along with the additional promotional tracks “Chavo Felix” and “Iván y Viene.” After the live set En Vivo Desde Culiacán, Sinaloa (2011), they issued Y Si Supieras (2011) and Generales de Batalla (2012), spotlighting the respective singles “El Mayito Gordo” and “Los Lujos” plus the Regional Mexican Airplay entries “Que Seas Feliz” and “Se Te Olvidos.” Although Diferentes Niveles in 2013 failed to chart, the opening track and lead single “Calla y Me Besas” from Enemigo en Casa (2014) reached number four on Regional Mexican Airplay. Despite solid sales, the group earned the bulk of its revenue through nonstop touring and YouTube videos that drew millions of views. Two compilations appeared next—La Vida del Rey, which produced the number 35 single “Que No Diera,” and the live Puras Rancheritas Pisteables—before the studio album Van a Querer Mas? arrived in 2016; neither charted yet performed strongly on streaming and social platforms. They returned to the charts via the Top 20 airplay single “Batallandola” from De Aqui Soy (2017), which also entered the Top 40 on Top Latin Albums and the Top 20 at streaming. A pair of live albums followed in 2018: Con Las Guitarritas en Vivo and Recordando a Pepe en Vivo con Tololoche. Although the Sinaloans released only one single the next year—the Top 20 “Aunque Sea en Silencio (Amor de Cuatro Paredes)”—they maintained a steady schedule of touring and recording. In February of the subsequent year they delivered Que Siga la Fiesta, which began with “Aunque Sea en Silencio (Amor de Cuatro Paredes).” Five additional singles appeared in 2019, among them the corrido “Javier Diaz,” which reached the Top 20 on Regional Mexican Songs in August. Their prolific output extended into 2020 with the album ¿Será Prudente?
