Biography
Born Timothy Brown in New York, USA, Father MC saw his first album feature the Top 20 US hit ‘I’ll Do 4 U’ along with an evocative opening exchange alongside Lady Kazan. Returning in 1994 after a long gap for his third album, Sex Is Law, he abandoned the MC tag he had used earlier. That decision matched a broader shift in style from lovers rock hip-hop toward raw gangsta pimp territory. Tracks heavy on gimmicks, including ‘69’, dominated the project as Father delivered one suggestive rhyme after another. A nod to the New Jack Swing era came via productions from Teddy Riley and Pete Rock, the latter incorporating an En Vogue sample into ‘R&B Swinger’. Additional sampling drew from the Jackson 5’s ‘I Want You Back’. The otherwise explicit content paused briefly for the duet with Little Shawn titled ‘For The Brothers Who Ain’t Here’, a poignant tribute to lives lost in the ghetto.
