By the close of 1993, siblings previously active in separate Florida and New York projects established the Latin pop/rock outfit Grito in New Jersey. The pair, performing under the nicknames Felix and Gio, aimed to launch the group within the expanding local rock en español circuit. Cuban-American Russ soon received an invitation to join, while Ecuadorian David Pérez earned his place as the strongest audition participant; Latin percussionist Celcio completed the roster. Early performances positioned Grito as an opener for heavy metal Héroes del Silencio, Argentinean Miguel Mateos, and Chilean los Tres. In 1996 the band appeared at the Latin rock festival Wateke with la Ley, la Castañeda, and Shakira; that same year saw the release of Paraíso del Eden, followed by Grito in 1999.
