Biography
Jack Kays fuses punk and emo's emotional purge with sturdy acoustic folk textures while occasionally dipping into cloud rap, yielding music that stays direct even as it resists simple labels. Following scattered independent drops, the Ohio native from Cincinnati achieved widespread online traction through lean yet forceful acoustic tracks, most notably "Morbid Mind." After inking with Columbia Records he issued his first full-length Mixed Emotions in February 2021. The joint EP My Favorite Nightmares with Travis Barker surfaced later that year, and the solo Cessation EP arrived in 2022. Anchored by its driving lead single "Caffeine," the 17-track album DEADBEAT! reached listeners in two installments during late 2024.
During his Cincinnati upbringing Kays repeatedly clashed with authorities and battled addiction as a teenager. Music offered both rescue and outlet: he first captured minimalist cloud rap numbers before shifting to a stripped-down acoustic style built solely around guitar and vocals. While pursuing culinary training and kitchen jobs alongside occasional performances, he initially avoided certain social platforms until his new manager urged him to upload material. The melodic, brooding "Morbid Mind" quickly spread across feeds, securing a Columbia contract. Drawing from lived experience, cuts such as "Gin n Juice" and "Bottom of the Bottle" heightened excitement for Mixed Emotions. He closed 2021 with the Barker collaboration, then dropped the 2022 singles "Wish You Well" and "Finally Fine" ahead of Cessation. The 2023 Caffeine EP, led by its title track, supplied the energetic single later featured on DEADBEAT!.
