Biography
Based in Sydney, Australia, Ned East operates as Kilter, shaping a bright and high-energy fusion of left-field hip-hop, tropical house, and indie electronic sounds. During high school he experimented with EDM mixes and edits, yet only after receiving Ableton Live for his eighteenth birthday did he commit fully to production, initially generating abstract beats influenced by Hudson Mohawke and J Dilla. The Forever Ago EP appeared in 2012. The next year brought remixes of tracks by RÜFÜS, Ben Pearce, and Sam La More, plus opening dates for New Zealand drum'n'bass group Shapeshifter; he also joined the etcetc roster and issued the yearning electro-house single "Hold Me." Flume's remix of "Gravel Pit," Kilter's collaboration with Matt Miller, helped increase visibility. Shades EP surfaced in 2014 and contained joint efforts with Ngaaire, Ev Jones, and Citizen Kay. East later cut a new version of the EP track "They Say" with Zimbabwean vocalist Tkay Maidza. By then he had built a reputation for dynamic live sets after extensive tours of Australia and New Zealand that included support runs with Little Dragon and Hermitude. In 2015 he reworked ODESZA's "All We Need," though his sole original release was "Want 2" with Porsches. "Fool for You" with Micah Jey and "They Don't Know Us" featuring Cam Nacson of MOZA both arrived in 2016.
