Emerging from Chicago, the youthful duranguense ensemble Mazizo Musical introduces an innovative approach to a genre experiencing swift ascent across the Spanish-speaking world. Unlike other regional Mexican styles that have either held steady or retreated from their mid-'90s peak, duranguense performers regularly achieve platinum-certified sales while filling concert venues and dance halls to capacity. Thanks to its vast Mexican population, Chicago serves as the genre's hub and now hosts nearly 200 active groups, even though the style itself had scarcely appeared five years earlier. Mazizo Musical distinguishes itself by incorporating acoustic instrumentation and a live horn section into a format typically built around synthesized sounds. Among expanding duranguense crowds, the seven-piece outfit stands out for its energetic live shows, youthful appearance, and stylish urban-inflected clothing. "Loco por Ti," their debut hit single and a reinterpretation of the Marco Antonio Solís favorite, features on Nuestros Suenos, the band's third Univision album.
