Biography
Generations of hardship might easily have derailed Toronto rapper Pressa, yet he channeled those ordeals into gritty street narratives that drew listeners, reviewers, and eventually Drake himself. Born Quinton Gardner in Toronto to a Filipino mother and Jamaican father, he grew up amid the struggles of the Driftwood area inside the Jane and Finch district. The name Pressa came from his father Prestige, who received a fifteen-year murder sentence when the future rapper was only five weeks old. Both Pressa and his brother repeatedly clashed with authorities; during one juvenile stint behind bars he began scribbling lyrics to capture the raw atmosphere of neighborhood life. The fatal police shooting of a childhood companion while both were still teenagers prompted him to organize the posse cut “Wass Gang” as a tribute.
Additional underground successes arrived, among them the 2017 track “Novacane” crafted by fellow Torontonian Murda Beatz. Pressa’s distinctive delivery and subject matter soon resonated past the city limits, catching the ear of Drake, already recognized as Toronto’s foremost hip-hop authority and a dominant presence across singles and streaming platforms. The established star invited the newcomer on several European dates that year, positioning Pressa as an emerging talent. Also in 2017 came the mixtapes Press Machine and Press a Brick, the latter propelled by the viral single “Canada Goose” that included Tory Lanez. Further partnerships ranged from British rapper Gibbs on “Sexy” to American artist Lil Uzi Vert on “420 in London.”
After authorities dismissed multiple charges in 2019, Pressa moved to Los Angeles and issued the album Prestige; the following year he delivered the Sony-distributed EP Gardner Express, anchored by the underground favorite “96 Freestyle.” Expanded twelve months later, the project gained fresh traction when a remix of “Attachments” featuring then-girlfriend Coi Leray spread widely online.
