Members of Long Island's Daytrader had spent years discussing the possibility of forming a group before they finally synchronized their schedules and began composing material together in summer 2010. Their arrival on the punk scene summoned the spirit of the late-'90s/early-2000s emo outfits, notably Further Seems Forever and Saves the Day, that had helped shape their direction. The roster brought together scene veterans vocalist Tym Barash (ex-Divider), guitarist Gary Cioni (ex-Crime in Stereo), drummer Pat Schramm (ex-Bridge and Tunnel, Latterman), bassist Jon Murray (ex-Monikers), and guitarist Mike Weiss (ex-the Motorcycle Industry); Schramm and Murray were eventually succeeded by drummer Derrick Flanagan and bassist Matt Mascarenas (ex-Reviver).

Once underway, the band acted quickly, issuing a three-song demo and performing live alongside kindred acts the Wonder Years, Such Gold, and Fireworks within months. They soon signed to Run for Cover Records and delivered their debut EP, Last Days of Rome, in January 2011. Extensive touring followed as they promoted the release with Transit and Into It. Over It. By fall the group had moved to the Rise Records roster and cut their next album with Long Island producer Mike Sapone (Taking Back Sunday, Brand New). The resulting full-length, Twelve Years, surfaced in May 2012.
