Emerging from Washington, D.C.’s Latin music underground, Dominican-American singer-songwriter Fuego established his presence through multiple solo successes during the first half of the 2010s and broadened his reach further by issuing a Spanish-language adaptation of Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” Blending Caribbean mambo, Latin trap, and hardcore rap, he issued several mixtapes alongside his 2010 studio debut La Música del Futuro before signing with Pitbull’s Mr. 305 imprint for the 2016 breakthrough Fireboy Forever 2. He then moved to a major-label deal that yielded the 2018 album Libre: Fireboy Forever and sustained momentum into the following decade with additional full-length projects, among them Supremo in 2021.

Born Miguel Duran on September 24, 1981, in Washington, D.C., Fuego grew up absorbing tropical-music icons such as Frankie Ruiz, Juan Luis Guerra, and Héctor Lavoe under his father’s guidance while independently cultivating tastes for American rappers including 2Pac, the Notorious B.I.G., and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. He launched his performing career in 1998 as part of the group 3Men2 (“Tremendo”), and although the ensemble disbanded, the experience sharpened abilities that later attracted Chencho of Plan B, who connected him with Boy Wonder. As founder of Chosen Few Emerald Entertainment, Boy Wonder recognized the vocalist’s potential and placed him on the 2005 various-artists compilation El Draft. Subsequent roster appearances followed on El Documental II (2006) and Chosen Few III: The Movie (2008). After the Amor y Fuego mixtape and the promotional single “Super Estrella” with Omega, Fuego issued “Que Buena Tu Ta,” featuring Dominican-born Hindi vocalist Deevani, as his first official solo release. The mambo-reggaeton hybrid first appeared in 2009 yet achieved widespread traction the next year, becoming one of the season’s leading tropical successes while ascending the Billboard Tropical Songs chart. Concurrently, Fuego delivered his debut album La Música del Futuro (2010) and the follow-up single “Ya Te Olvidé.” The ensuing period brought relentless touring and a steady flow of new material. He eventually relocated from D.C. to Miami, unveiling the 2013 single and video “Mala Mía.” Additional singles preceded the late-2014 mixtape Fireboy Forever. The year 2015 proved pivotal: Fuego joined Mr. 305 and scored a viral success with “Cuándo Suena El Bling,” his Spanish-language version of Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” Although some observers ranked the track above the original, it was merely the most prominent in a series of Spanish reinterpretations that also encompassed works by Travis Scott and Gyptian. Early 2016 saw the arrival of his second album, Fireboy Forever 2. Subsequent collaboration with producer DVLP, previously linked to hits for Lady Gaga and Eminem, led to Libre: Fireboy Forever, Fuego’s first major-label release, issued by Universal Music Latino in summer 2018. His next project for the label, 2019’s You’re Welcome, included guest appearances by C. Tangana, Nicky Jam, and A.CHAL. Two concise releases followed in quick succession: Nightshift in 2020 and Supremo in 2021.
