Memphis rapper Gloss Up first gained notice for her fluid, witty rhymes paired with a style that mixes glamour and everyday relatability. After building momentum in the local hip-hop circuit, she released her first mixtape, Different Shades of Gloss, in 2019 and later signed with Quality Control, the label that put out Before the Gloss Up and Shades of Gloss in 2023. Not Ya Girl: Act 1 arrived the following year.

Raised in Memphis, she discovered rap young, sharpening her delivery in school battles and laying verses over beats by Meek Mill and Future. She began posting her own songs online; after a brief stint with an all-female collective, she struck out independently. In 2019 she formed a tight alliance with rising rapper GloRilla and dropped Different Shades of Gloss that same year. A series of singles led to her appearance alongside GloRilla, K Carbon, and Slimeroni on the HitKidd-produced cut “Set the Tone,” which lifted her profile further. Quality Control soon took notice and inked a deal, issuing the full-length Before the Gloss Up early in 2023. More singles followed before she delivered her second project for the imprint, Shades of Gloss. The seven-track Not Ya Girl: Act 1 surfaced in 2024, featuring Jacquees, Hunxho, and Skilla Baby.
