Jonathan Traylor, a singer, keyboardist, songwriter, and dancer based in Dallas, fuses contemporary gospel with CCM, adult contemporary R&B, and pop. After issuing his debut album Stones & Giants independently in 2018, he joined the Motown Gospel roster; the label reissued the project in 2019, and it accumulated a million streams inside its first month on the market.

Born and raised in Dallas within a church environment, Traylor performed in the youth choir of the congregation led by his stepfather. Appearances of stability masked a harsher reality: the same man who preached about Jesus on Sundays subjected Traylor, his mother, and his siblings to physical and emotional abuse. Once the marriage dissolved, the household descended into poverty, enduring periods of homelessness that included sleeping on wooden pallets inside a storefront. Traylor mowed lawns to contribute financially yet clung to his beliefs. With earnings from that work he purchased a secondhand Casio keyboard at a pawnshop, despite having no playing experience, and continued assisting at his neighborhood church during his teenage years. Alone one afternoon inside the empty sanctuary—where he possessed a key—he prayed at the altar for divine instruction in music so he could serve the congregation through song. Soon afterward he began replicating radio melodies by ear and composing original material.

He went on to direct youth and music ministries, guided by supportive senior figures. During an appearance on the Jonathan J Speaks podcast, Traylor explained that his sole intention had been to assist his church rather than pursue a professional career. Those prayers bore fruit. Several years later he made his recording debut as lead vocalist for the Christian rock and worship group One1Way, which issued two independent streaming singles: the 2014 live track “Rise” and the 2015 release “Here I Am.” After touring churches with the band, Traylor stepped out on his own while balancing responsibilities as a husband and father. His wife Ryan also pursued ministry, creating the YouTube series Wife Life to encourage wives, mothers, and single women.

In 2018 Traylor personally funded the recording and production of his first full-length project, Stones & Giants. He wrote nearly every one of its twelve tracks and shared production duties with his U.K.-born and -bred collaborator Mr. Damention. Standout cuts included the anthemic “Won’t Let Me Down” alongside the worship ballads “Masterpiece” and “Breathe Life.” The album resonated within gospel circles, enabling Traylor to perform in churches throughout the region. Even without marketing support, listeners worldwide discovered the recording. Early in 2019 Motown Gospel offered him a recording contract while Capitol CMG simultaneously extended a publishing agreement.

The label’s 2019 re-release of Stones & Giants received an aggressive promotional push. The project surpassed a million streams in its opening month, aided by videos, compilations, and playlist placements. Following additional church dates, Traylor began headlining theaters in his hometown. Late that year he entered the studio to work on a sophomore album, only for the global coronavirus pandemic to halt progress. In May 2020 he issued the three-track EP The Unknown, whose message highlighted God’s faithfulness amid uncertainty. Its closing selection, a live rendition of “Purpose Over Pleasure” originally from Stones & Giants, was serviced to Christian radio as a single.
