Biography
Born in Lenexa, Kansas, Matt Gary crafts country music that merges contemporary Nashville production with pop melodies and rock & roll drive. Despite his parents showing little interest in the art form, he developed an early affinity for the genre, drawing particular inspiration from Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban while also absorbing pop acts such as Maroon 5 and John Mayer. Songwriting entered his life during his studies at the University of Tampa, where he majored in Computer Information Systems and Digital Art. Upon earning his degree, he chose to pursue music full-time and moved to Nashville. There he began collaborating with producer Kent Wells, resulting in the 2009 release of his debut single, "The Days You Live For," and the follow-up EP I'm Just Sayin'. As his understanding of the business deepened, he launched his own imprint, 17 Music Entertainment, to retain more authority over his path. The label issued "City Lights" in 2012, then "Summertime" in 2014. In 2015 Gary partnered with producer Ilya Toshinskiy—who had previously served as a session musician for Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, and Luke Bryan—on the pop-rock-leaning single "It's on You."
