Texas-born Jay Bradley, later known as YBN Almighty Jay, first encountered music through his mother's gospel records before gravitating toward rap and composing his own verses by age nine. During his teenage years he pursued ambitions as a YouTube personality and adopted the moniker King Almighty Jay after Chief Keef's 2013 mixtape Almighty So. An avid gamer, he frequently met other players on Xbox Live, and around 2014 he connected with Birmingham, Alabama native Nick Simmons; the pair's shared sessions eventually evolved from gaming into freestyle exchanges over Grand Theft Auto, marking the start of what became the YBN crew. For several years afterward, Jay and Simmons—who would later record as YBN Nahmir—wrote and released material independently online before meeting in person in 2017, shortly after Nahmir's breakthrough single "Rubbin Off the Paint." Jay himself broke through late that year with the viral track "Chopsticks" and its accompanying video, securing a distribution arrangement with Human Re Sources. Subsequent 2018 releases included the Rich the Kid remix of "Chopsticks," "Takin Off," "Bread Winners" with Nahmir, "2 Tone Drip," and "Off Instagram." Throughout 2018 he also joined Rich the Kid on multiple collaborations and drew public notice for his relationship with model and entrepreneur Blac Chyna. Although the broader YBN circle encompassed roughly ten members, Jay remained one of the central trio alongside Nahmir and YBN Cordae; their combined efforts surfaced as YBN: The Mixtape in fall 2018. A new single, "Spaceship," followed in July 2019.
