Kaptan

Performing under the name Kaptan, Nashville singer-songwriter Andrew de Torres delivers an energetic stage presence through his glittering indie pop sound. Before adopting that moniker, de Torres had already performed with the comparable independent groups Danger Radio and the Scene Aesthetic. Born in 1985, he spent his childhood in Edmonds, Washington, where he first encountered future Danger Radio colleague Nico Hartikainen during middle school. The Seattle outfit added drummer Marvin Kunkel and issued its debut album by 2004. The following year, de Torres joined Eric Kimberlin to create the duo the Scene Aesthetic. Throughout the ensuing period, he divided his efforts among both bands while also launching solo work. His 2012 move to Nashville, Tennessee, prompted the adoption of the Kaptan stage name, and around the same time he established the South by Sea label alongside producer and songwriter Brandon Metcalf. The Sprinter EP arrived in 2015 and included the track “Anywhere We Go,” followed by the single “Moving On” in 2017.
