Biography
A singer and songwriter whose music blends cool restraint with unguarded feeling, Roy English entered the world as Brandon Roy Wronski in Los Angeles, California, on May 22, 1988. His first professional steps came in the mid-2000s when he joined the band Dead Letter Diaries. In 2006 he and fellow member Cameron Trowbridge left that outfit to launch Eye Alaska, where Wronski assumed the central role of lead vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, principal songwriter, and co-producer. Fearless Records signed the group, which issued the EP Yellow & Elephant in 2008 and the album Genesis Underground the following year, yet Wronski grew restless and the band dissolved in 2011. He briefly spoke of starting another project, but by 2012 his interest in music had faded and he was preparing to settle in Boise, Idaho, with ordinary employment in mind when producer Jeff Bhasker recognized his unused potential. Adopting the stage name Roy English, Wronski secured a Lava/Republic recording contract in 2013 thanks to Bhasker’s introduction; the arrangement lasted only a year and yielded no releases before the label ended it. A subsequent publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music led to his participation in a 2014 session for Lana Del Rey’s single “I Can Fly.” English issued his debut solo single, “Julianne,” in 2015 and supplied vocals that same year for DJ Alesso’s track “Cool,” which climbed into the dance Top Ten in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Also appearing in 2015 was “Tongue Tied July,” a Michael Brun collaboration featuring English on lead vocals that later surpassed five million streams. In 2016 he released the EP I’m Not Here, Pt. 1 and supported indie emo band 5 Seconds of Summer on tour, then returned in 2017 with the single “Hotel Pools 01101001.”
