Tru operates as a gangsta rap trio assembled by No Limit architect Master P alongside his two younger siblings, Silkk and C-Murder. Their 1995 debut album, True, elevated the group to the label’s top-selling act after moving more than 200,000 units despite minimal marketing or radio exposure and simultaneously positioned No Limit as a rising power within underground hip-hop. The follow-up, Tru 2 da Game, arrived in the first months of 1997. In the wake of that release No Limit surged in popularity, propelling Master P to widespread stardom. Between his expanding responsibilities at the imprint, his growing involvement in film production, basketball, and athlete representation, and the rising solo profiles of Silkk and C-Murder, the two-year gap before the arrival of the third album, Da Crime Family, seemed inevitable—an unusually long stretch by the rapid standards of No Limit.
