Biography
Sukilove emerged as a five-piece Antwerp ensemble fronted by Pascal Deweze, who serves as the group’s principal singer and songwriter. American listeners first encountered Deweze in 2001, when he formed one half of the Belgian alt-country duo Chitlin’ Fooks alongside Bettie Serveert vocalist Carol Van Dijk; together they merged a pronounced Gram Parsons-derived approach to American roots rock with a clear affinity for the gentler strains of 1960s pop. Guitarist Helder Deploige, keyboardist Pieter Van Buyten, bassist Guy Van Nueten, and drummer Stoffel Verlackt steer the ensemble toward the latter influence, resulting in a sound noticeably free of twang and lightly tinged with psychedelia. The band’s first American release, Talking in the Dark, appeared on Hidden Agenda Records in April 2002. Two years later Deweze collaborated with producer John Morand on You Kill Me, an angular noise-rock outburst that preserved the ensemble’s melodic charm while expanding its sonic force.
