Biography
Unghetto Mathieu first surfaced toward the close of the 2010s both as a dancer with Team NueEra and, in his solo guise, as one of several voices shaping the buoyant strain of trap known as “happy trap.” By placing a buoyant, melodic gloss over the genre’s customary themes of narcotics and aggression, he issued his earliest official solo recordings in 2017; the following year he strengthened his profile through joint releases with Lil Yachty on “23” and with Ugly God on “Been Thru.” His profile rose sharply in 2020 once he unveiled “Plastic,” built around a sample of “Barbie Girl.”
Born Mathieu Mayumba in Covington, Georgia, he initially entered the music business through dance. He appeared with Team NueEra—also called NueEra Boyz—a troupe that later expanded into recording, and he can be seen in clips by Young Thug and Gucci Mane. His first tracks to reach the marketplace arrived in 2017 and included “Gang Up,” “Yeah” featuring Fly Ty, and “Colors” featuring his brother King Imprint alongside SpiteLee. Priority Records added him to its roster before the year ended, and in 2018 he maintained momentum with the Lil Yachty collaboration “23” plus “Been Thru” alongside Ugly God. The next year brought a modest commercial success in the Aqua-sampling “Plastic,” which he followed in 2021 with “Hi,” an interpolation of Eiffel 65’s ’90s novelty hit.
