Freddie Gladney, born in Helena, Arkansas, dropped the 2017 freestyle "Lil Baby." Quality Control CEO Pierre Thomas noticed the cut, shared one of his subsequent freestyles, and brought him out to Los Angeles. Following the 2019 mixtape Saved by the Bales, Quality Control issued a remix of "Drip Like Dis" that featured Young Dolph and Lil Baby. Once that track took off, he issued "Lil Mama" with Renni Rucci. For the 2021 project Big Bank he assembled an extensive roster of guests—2 Chainz, Gucci Mane, EST Gee, PnB Rock, BIG30, and Megan Thee Stallion, who joined him on the lead single "Pop It."
